Last Wednesday saw Ryanair call on the new chairman of the Dublin Airport Authority David Dilger to take positive action regarding what they referred to as the appalling service levels at Dublin Airport.

Recently over one hundred passengers missed their morning flight due to huge lines at security points. Many passengers spoke of lines being as long as a half kilometre, According to Ryanair there were just eight security points open at five am meaning that nine were closed.

The budget airline further criticised the DAA for “re-deployment of staff” which they say the average passenger is footing the bill for. They also took a pop at the terminal two building claiming “lollypop men” at the site were of more importance to the DAA than airport security.

A spokesman for Ryanair Stephen McNamara spoke of the declining number of passengers at Dublin airport and how the DAA must take their share of the blame due to making Dublin Airport one of the most expensive airports in the world to pass through. With summer peak periods fast approaching Ryanair asked that new chairman Dilger take an urgent look at the situation.

Irish Bank Holiday Dublin Car Hire

This weekend is a bank holiday in Ireland which means plenty of people will be looking to get out and see some of the country. The weather forecast looks good (well at least better than usual) so there just might be some sunshine.

Recent reports have suggested that car ownership rates have dropped significantly in Ireland since the current recession began. A car can be an expensive item to keep with insurance and break down costs that can occur with older vehicles.

Car hire rates are cheaper than ever this year in many locations depending on fleet sizes. Hiring a car at Dublin, Shannon, Cork or any other Irish locations is a cheap option of getting about and seeing some of the country this weekend. It will most likely work out cheaper than public transportation and will leave the schedule entirely in your own hands.

So will it be Cork and a kiss of the Blarney Stone? Or Shannon with a visit to the Cliffs of Moher or Bunratty Castle? Perhaps you will travel to Dublin and take in lots of historical sights during the day and enjoy the bank holiday atmosphere at night? Or maybe head up north to visit the legendary Giants Causeway?  There is certainly no shortage of choice.

According to a recent poll by Tesco Finance thirty four percent of British people will spend less on their annual holiday this year. Twelve percent have those polled said they would be spending much less than usual.

Two thousand people from the UK took part in the survey with the results showing that most people are doing what they can to save the pennies this summer. Areas where holiday makers intend to spend less include food and drink (54%) and duty free (43%)

Self catering accommodation is proving more popular than ever this year as it gives people the option of buying cheap local food and eating at their apartment. The camping holiday also appears to be making a comeback with people opting for campervans and staying at camping sites.

Many Brits are also bringing their favourite food items from home with them including items such as cereal and teabags. Almost two thirds of the people polled said they would be planning their spending in detail before they set off.

In a breakdown of area habits it seems that the most bargain conscious consumers come from the Midlands.

The Leinster rugby team received a warm welcome on Saturday night at Dublin Airport as they returned with the European Cup. Airport passengers heading for various destinations joined with hardened Leinster supporters in cheering the team.

One Irishman hoped to convince his wife to stick around for the celebrations as she was due to arrive from Costa Rica. There was much talk regarding the outhalf Johnny Sexton and how he had come through for the team. Peter Griffin just back from Edinburgh spoke of his emotion and declared the triumph as the “the most incredible thing I have ever seen” even better than All Ireland finals and Grand Slams.

The team arrived into Dublin Airport at 11.30am. The captain of the team Leo Cullen emerged holding the trophy aloft. He spoke of his delight to be home saying that all the hard work had been worth it.

Fans at Kiely’s Pub in Donnybrook were hopeful the team would get a chance to drop by with the trophy. Memories of the Irish football team’s return in 1990 were mentioned by some fans.

Bernard Jackman eventually arrived at Kiely’s cup in tow as champagne corks popped.
